When we first started out at Voilà Fine Art, we kept talking about renting “original art” to businesses and individuals in our community. As artists and women of the world, we knew for ourselves what that term meant--to us it was obvious! However, when it came to our partnerships with local artists, we realized that maybe it wasn’t obvious; we needed to more clearly articulate what we meant.
What does “original art” actually mean?
As we at Voilà see it, art is considered "original" if:
a.) a person makes it with their own skills, abilities, and tools, AND
b.) it was that person’s unique idea.
(If a person makes something themselves but it’s another person’s idea, that’s not original.)
This is a murky topic in the art world, and we don't claim to be experts! Some might say that no art is original! After all, we are all influenced by the world around us and the other art we see.
Long-winded semantics discussions aside, let me tell you why we think it’s so great to have original art in your life!
